[metalloproteinase-like disintegrin-like cysteine-rich protein-3] This protein is a member of the ADAM protein family. The protein has been named ADAM23. It is closely related to ADAM11. A zinc-binding motif, which is critical for proteinase activity, is disrupted in the metalloproteinase-like domain of MDC-3. The protein also does not contain the RDG sequence found in other members of the family. mRNA for MDC-3 is expressed highly in the brain. Transcript sizes range in size from 3.5 to 7 kb.
Note: ADAM23 is considered a literature alias and is identical with ADAM28.
