[multidrug resistance to cancer 1] The MDR-1 gene is a gene amplified in multidrug resistant human cell lines that are resistant to colchicine, vinblastine, or Adriamycin (doxorubicin) (Roninson et al, 1986). Transfer of the full-length cDNA encoding the MDR-1 gene confers resistance to all three agents (Ueda et al, 1987). Ueda et al (1986) have shown that the MDR-1 gene codes for P-glycoprotein, which has been identified also as gp170.
In the nomenclature of CD antigens this protein has been given the designation CD243.
