[Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus ORF8b] this open reading frame in the genome of MERS-CoV [Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus], the causative agent of severe-to-fatal pneumonia, encodes one of several viral accessory proteins. This virulence factor strongly inhibits the IFN-beta promoter activity promoted by the two pattern recognition receptors MDA-5 and RIG-I. Downstream signaling molecules are left largely unaffected. MDA-5 protein levels are down-regulated significantly by MERS-CoV ORF8b and co-expression of MERS-CoV ORF4a and MERS-CoV ORF4b (Lee et al, 2019).
