[Mytilus galloprovincialis defensin-1]; often referred to as mussel defensin. This peptide of 38 amino acids (GFGCPNNYQCHRHCKSIPGRCGGYCGGWHRLRCTCYRC) belongs to the family of defensins. The peptide contains 8 cysteine residues (all of which are involved in disulfide bonding) (Yang et al, 2000), a modified hydroxylated tryptophan residue in position 28, and is processed from a longer precursor expressed in hemocytes (Mitta et al, 1999; Hubert et al, 1996).
