This human myeloma cell line (Van Riet et al, 1997) can be maintained only in the presence of human bone marrow-derived stromal cells (see also: BMC (bone marrow culture) or in the presence of conditioned medium derived from stromal cells. The cells do not grow in the presence of exogenous IL6 alone.
MM5.1 cells have a plasma cell morphology and expresses plasma cell antigens (cytoplasmic kappa light chain, CD38, BB4). In the absence of factors produced by stromal cells MM5.1 cells die by apoptosis
