[myeloperoxidase] The protein has been identified independently as AURA60 [augmented in rheumatoid arthritis 60].
This peroxidase is a strongly basic lysosomal protein expressed most prominently in the azurophilic granules of neutrophils (Agner, 1941; Bainton et al, 1971; Kinkade et al, 1983; Schultz and Kaminker, 1962). It is expressed at much lower levels also in monocytes (Nichols and Bainton, 1973). The restricted expression of MPO in myeloid precursor cells makes MPO mRNA a good marker of acute myeloid leukemia (Tsuruta et al, 1999). MPO has been detected also in microglia and macrophages in and around multiple sclerosis lesions (Nagra et al, 1997) and in the lesions of patients with Alzheimer's disease (Reynolds et al, 1999).
