This factor of 70 kDa is a disulfide-linked heterodimer (47 and 22 kDa subunits) isolated from human blood plasma. High levels of MSP RNA are found in liver tissues. MSP is derived from an 80 kDa precursor protein that is cleaved by serine proteases of the intrinsic coagulation cascade, including serum kallikrein, factor XIIa and factor XIa. NGF-gamma and epidermal growth factor-binding protein (EGFBP) have been shown also to cleave and activate pro-MSP at concentrations about 2 orders of magnitude less than those required for cleavage by serum kallikrein or
