Macrophage growth factor

abbr. MGF (a term with multiple meanings). Apart from the term being a general designation for any activity promoting the growth of macrophages, two distinct activities have been described under this name. One activity described as macrophage growth factor by Baird et al (1985) is identical with bFGF. Another factor, isolated initially as an activity stimulating cell division in adherent activated peritoneal macrophages, is identical with M-CSF (Cifone and Defendi, 1974; Mauel and Defendi, 1971; Stanley et al, 1976).
