Mahjong

This Drosophila melanogaster protein, encoded by gene CG10080 (gene symbol: mahj), has been identified by Tamori et al (2010). The protein shows high amino acid sequence identity (38 %) with human VprBP [viral protein R-binding protein]. Mahjong has been shown to interact with lgl [Lethal giant larvae] and participates in a selection process known as cell competition, which provides a mechanism of tissue homeostasis in which winner cells induce cell death in loser cells (hence the name) and thus conserve the integrity of the tissue by removal of cells with reduced fitness.
