These cells (Martinotti, 1889; Ramon y Cajal, 1891) are specialized neurons with ascending axons found in various layers of the cerebral cortex and form a fanlike spread of axonal collaterals, with axons bearing spine-like boutons (Marin-Padilla, 1984; Werner et al, 1985; Fairen et al, 1984). The cells express somatostatin. Subpopulations of these cells express Calbindin, calretinin, neuropeptide Y and cholecystokinin together with somatostatin. The cells do not express parvalbumin or vasoactive intestinal peptide.
It has been proposed that these cells represent crucial interneurons
