[Mauthner cell, Mauthner neuron, Mauthner neurons]
Mauthner cells (abbr. M cells) are specialized reticulospinal neurons located in the hindbrain of fish and amphibians. Urodelian and anuran Mauthner cells show differences with respect to their abundant somatic dendrites, axon cap structures, lack of nodes of Ranvier, and size of axon collaterals (Will, 1991).
Mauthner cells receive neurally coded information from the otolith organs and play an important role in the initiation and directional characteristics of a predator escape mechanism known as the C-start response (Sillar, 2009; Fetcho, 1991; Eaton et al, 1991).
