[Measles virus phosphoprotein] This protein is encoded in the genome of Measles virus. It is the product of the P gene which also encodes Measles V protein and Measles C protein (Belolini et al, 1985; Devaux and Cattaneo, 2004). The protein acts as a viral polymerase cofactor and is involved in the asembly of the nucleoprotein (Huber et al, 1991; Spehner et al, 1997).
The protein also is a virulence factor that contributes to immune evasion by counteracting host interferon (IFN-alpha, IFN-beta) responses. This involves blocking the nuclear translocation of STAT proteins after IFN activation and by inhibiting STAT1 phosphorylation (Devaux et al, 2007).
