The human mesothelin gene (approved gene symbol: MSLN) (Chang and Pastan, 1996) encodes a precursor protein that is processed into 2 mature polypeptides: the N-terminal soluble MPF [megakaryocyte potentiating factor] (see), which may play a role in platelet biology, and the C-terminal membrane-bound mesothelin which functions as a cell adhesion molecule. The counterpart of human mesothelin in the rat has been described as ERC [expressed in renal carcinoma] as its expression is upregulated in tumors developing in the Eker rat, which develops hereditary renal carcinomas due to two hit mutations of the tumor suppressor
