[microvillar cell]
These cells have been identified in the human olfactory mucosa located near the epithelial surface (Moran et al, 1982). The cells are flask-shaped, electron-lucent. The apical end is a tuft of microvilli that project into the mucus layer lining the nasal cavity. The authors have suggested that these cells may be bipolar sensory neurons, functioning as a morphologically distinct class of chemoreceptor in the human olfactory mucosa that differ from ciliated olfactory receptors.
