These cells are atypical large phagocytic cells (specific foamy macrophages) containing ingested bacteria (Hoffmann et al, 1973). They are found specifically in granuloma tissue of patients with Rhinosleroma, a rare chronic infection of the upper airways. The disease is caused by the bacterium K. pneumoniae subspecies rhinoscleromatis, which is very closely related to K. pneumoniae subspecies pneumoniae (Canalis RF and Zamboni L, 2001). Fevre et al (2013) have developed a mouse model of the disease, have identified Mikulicz cells as inflammatory monocytes and shown that very few disease-specific Mikulicz cells in the absence of IL10.
