The Monarch-1 gene has been identified by Williams et al (2003). Four different splice forms have been described. Monarch-1 is a member of a protein family characterised by the presence of a Pyrin domain, a nucleotide binding site, and a leucine-rich repeat motif (LRR). Expression of Monarch-1 has been shown to enhance nonclassical and classical MHC class 1 expression. The protein is identical with PYPAF7 and belongs to a larger protein family described as CATERPILLER, members of which have been implicated in the regulation of immunity.
