Moronecidin is a C-terminally amidated peptide of 22 amino acids isolated from the skin and gill of hybrid striped bass (Morone saxatilis). Two isoforms (FFHHIFRGIVHVGKTIH(K/R)LVTGT; FFHHIFRGIVHVGKTIHKLVTGT; FFHHIFRGIVHVGKTIHRLVTGT) differing by only one amino acid, are derived from each parental species, white bass (Morone chrysops) and striped bass (Morone saxatilis). Peptide sequence and gene organization are similar to pleurocidin (Lauth et al, 2002) and Piscidins. The gene is expressed in gill, skin, intestine, spleen, anterior kidney, and blood cells. Moronecidin has a broad spectrum of antimicrobial activity that is retained at high salt concentrations.
