The Drosophila Mad gene [mothers against dpp; gene: CG12399] has been identified by Sekelsky et al (1995). Mad is required for the Drosophila decapentaplegic (dpp), which encodes a growth factor that belongs to the TGF-beta superfamily and that plays a central role in multiple cell-cell signaling events throughout development. Homozygous Mad mutant animals exhibit defects in midgut morphogenesis, imaginal disc development and embryonic dorsal-ventral patterning that are very reminiscent of dpp mutant phenotypes.
This is the same as Mothers against decapentaplegic homolog 1. Abbr. MADH1
