Mytilus inhibitory peptides

abbr. MIPs. These short neuropeptides (Gly-Ser-Pro-Met-Phe-Valamide (GSPMFVamide) and Gly-Ala-Pro-Met-Phe-Valamide (GAPMFVamide)) were isolated originally from the bivalve mollusk Mytilus edulis (Hirata et al, 1988; Fujisawa et al, 1991, 1993). Similar peptides have been identified in other molluscan species: the African giant snail Achatina fulica (Ikeda et al, 1992), the clam Meretrix lusoria (Ohtani et al, 1995), the pond snail Lymnaea stagnalis (Li et al, 1996). These peptides mostly have inhibitory actions on target muscles and hyperpolarize central neurons (Yongsiri et al, 1989; Kiss, 1990; Kiss and Osipenko, 1997).
