[neurite growth-promoting factor-2] The human NEGF-2 gene maps to chromosome 11p13-p11. The mature protein has a length of 121 amino acids and is 46 % homologous with another heparin binding neurite outgrowth-promoting factor, NEGF-1 (see: HBNF, heparin binding neurite-promoting factor). NEGF-2 is known also as midkine.
The protein also possesses neurite outgrowth-promoting activity and the gene is a member of a highly conserved, developmentally regulated human gene family. NEGF-2 plays a role in nervous system development and/or maintenance and its expression is developmentally regulated. NEGF-2 protein is barely detectable before and after approximately one half to two thirds of the gestation period.
