Neuromacin

Neuromacin belongs to the family of Macins. This antimicrobial peptide from leeches displays pore-forming activity and is potently active against Staphylococcus aureus. Jung et al (2012) have reported that Neuromacin is also able to enhance the repair of leech neuronal cells ex vivo. The peptide also enhances the viability of murine neuroblastoma cells, extending their functional characteristics.

For other proteins/peptides with functions in innate immunity and/or antimicrobial activities see also: Innate immunity and defense peptides Dictionary.
