These factors are small neuropeptides (see also: regulatory peptide factors) defined operationally by their ability to stimulate smooth muscle cells. Some of these factors have been identified as Tachykinins, others resemble Bombesin or Neurotensin. Another example is Neuromedin U (Malendowicz et al, 1998) and Neuromedin S.
