Nidogen-1 is an extracellular matrix protein identified independently in the mouse as a 150 kDa sulfated basement membrane glycoprotein termed entactin (Durkin et al, 1988). The human gene encoding Nidogen-1 has been characterized by Nagayoshi et al (1989) and Zimmermann et al (1995). Nidogen-1 forms a highly stable noncovalent complex with laminin and also binds collagen-4 (Chung and Durkin, 1990). Gersdorff et al (2005) have reported binding of Nidogen-1 to laminin-gamma-3.
