[orthopoxvirus MHC class I-like protein] is a protein encoded by monkey poxvirus and cowpox virus (CPXV) that is secreted from infected cells. OMCP has been shown to bind with high affinity to human and mouse NKG2D on NK-cells and T-cell subsets and potently inhibits killing of target cells. It has been shown that NKG2D plays a role in host defense against zoonotic orthopoxviruses (Fang et al, 2008).
Campbell et al (2010) have shown that OMCP also binds to B-cells and monocytes / macrophages, which do not express NKG2D. They have identified the receptor for OMCP on B-cells as
