Oligoventin, QPFSLERW [Gln-Pro-Phe-Ser-Leu-Glu-Arg-Trp], is an arachnid host defense peptide isolated from the eggs of the Brazilian armed spider Phoneutria nigriventer (Ctenidae, Araneomorphae) (Candido-Ferreira et al, 2017). Oligoventin inhibits growth of yeast, Gram-positive bacteria and Gram-negative bacteria and also exhibits synergy with lysozyme against Micrococcus luteus. Oligoventin is thought to be a cryptic peptide derived from the proteasomal degradation of E3 ubiquitin ligases, released by the proteolytic processing of an NEDD4 E3 precursor protein.
