Ovulation-inducing factor is found in the seminal plasma in some species (llamas, alpacas, Bactrian camels, cattle, rabbits, pigs, mice, horses) that potently induces ovulation, suggesting that in these species ovulation may not depend on the activation of a neural pathway (for overview see: Adams and Ratto, 2013; Adams et al, 2016). It also appears to play a role in the development of the corpus luteum. The ovarian effects of the ovulation-inducing factor are associated with a surge release of Luteinizing hormone into the circulation.
