[peritubular factor that modulates Sertoli cell function] This biochemically undefined protein is synthesized by testicular peritubular cells that surround the seminiferous tubules in the testis (Skinner and Fritz, 1985). Its expression is controlled by androgens (Verhoeven and Cailleau, 1988). P-Mod-S appears to be an activity consisting of several proteins that have an affinity for heparin (Skinner et al, 1988). P-Mod-S (A) (56 kDa) and a more hydrophobic form, P-Mod-S (B), (59 kDa), have similar biological activities and mechanisms of action. The proteins stimulate cyclic GMP, alter Sertoli cell gene expression, and upregulate transferrin production (Norton and Skinner, 1989, 1992).
