[pro-apoptotic nucleolar protein] PANO (approved gene symbol: PANO1 [pro-apoptotic nucleolar protein 1]) has been identified by Watari et al (2012) as a pro-apoptotic nucleolar protein that modulates the expression and activity of the tumor suppressor protein p14ARF in HeLa cells. Overexpression of PANO protects p14ARF from degradation. Overexpression of PANO under low serum conditions induces cell death by apoptosis. This effect is dependent on the nucleolar localization of PANO and inhibited by knock-down of p14ARF expression. Ectopic expression of PANO suppresses the tumorigenicity of HeLa cells in nude mice.
