[prostatic androgen repressed message-1; Prostate androgen-regulated mucin-like protein 1 homolog] is a transmembrane protein identified as a gene that shows induced in prostate tissue in response to castration. The PARM-1 protein is found exclusively in the epithelial cells of involuting prostate, and the kinetic of induction of PARM-1 gene expression in the prostate is correlated highly to the development of apoptosis in the whole organ (Bruyninx et al, 1999). The protein has been referred to also as CIPAR-1 [Castration-induced prostatic apoptosis-related protein 1].
