[peripheral blood insulin-producing cells] This cell population has been obtained from adult human blood (Zhao et al, 2007). The cells express transcription factors associated with embryonic stem cells and express hematopoietic markers CD9, CD45, and CD117. They lack expression of the hematopoietic stem cell marker CD34 and also do not express markers for lymphocytes and monocytes or macrophages. In vitro and in vivo PB-IPC show characteristics of islet beta-cell progenitor cells including the expression of beta cell-specific insulin gene
