PB1-F2

This protein is encoded by influenza A virus (encoded by the +1 reading frame of gene PB1). The protein shows variable expression in individual infected cells, is degraded rapidly by a proteasome-dependent pathway degradation and localizes to mitochondria.

Exposure of cells to PB1-F2 causes cell death by apoptosis. Viruses with targeted mutations that interfere with PB1-F2 expression induce less extensive apoptosis in human monocytes than those with intact PB1-F2.

For other entries pertaining to cell death mechanisms see also the Apoptosis and Cell Death Dictionary section of this encyclopedia.
