[PDZ domains]
PDZ domains protein-protein interaction domains with a length of approximately 90 amino acids. The acronym was coined from the first three proteins in which they were identified: the postsynaptic protein PSD-95/SAP90, the Drosophila melanogaster septate junction protein Discs-large, and the tight junction protein ZO-1. These domains occur in multiple proteins in many different organisms and are among the most common protein domains known (Bezprozvanny and Maximov, 2001; Kennedy, 1995; Vaccaro and Dente, 2002).
PDZ domains bind the carboxyl termini of proteins. Frequently, these domains occur in multiple copies and/or are closely grouped in tandem arrays comprising two or three such domains. Proteins that contain PDZ interaction domains
