This antigen is detected by an antibody found in the serum of a polytransfused patient and of a mother with an infant with neonatal thrombocytopenia. Furihata et al (1988) have shown that the antigen is identical with the alpha subunit of platelet glycoprotein Ib (GPIb-alpha). In the nomenclature of CD antigens this protein has been given the designation CD42b.
