[proliferation inducing gene-2; Cell proliferation-inducing gene 2 protein] This gene has been identified in a search for oncogenes involved in cervical carcinogenesis. The gene encodes a protein of 184 amino acids and is very closely related to Gremlin-1 (99 % homology) and the authors take it to be gremlin-1.
Expression of PIG2 is generally down-regulated in diverse human normal tisues. HEK293 engineered to express PIG-2 exhibit growth stimulation and increased telomerase activity. PIG2 is strongly expressed in cervical cancer tissue, metastatic lymph node tissue, and cervical cancer cells
