[Prolactin-like protein K, Placental prolactin-like protein K, PRL-like protein K] abbr. and gene symbol PRLPK or Prl2b1 [prolactin family 2 subfamily B member 1].
This protein is a member of an expanded prolactin family of genes, which encode secreted structurally related hormones that are expressed most prominently in the anterior pituitary, uterus and placenta. These cytokines (see also: PRL-like proteins) are expressed in a gestationally specific pattern and are thought to be involved in the control of maternal-fetal adaptations during different phases of pregnancy (Wiemers et al, 2003).
