[Prolactin-like protein M, Placental prolactin-like protein M, PRL-like protein M] abbr. and gene symbol PRLPM or Prl2a1 [prolactin family 2 subfamily A member 1].
This protein is a member of an expanded prolactin family of rodent genes, which encode secreted structurally related hormones that are expressed most prominently in the anterior pituitary, uterus and placenta. These cytokines (see also: PRL-like proteins) are expressed in a gestationally specific pattern and are thought to be involved in the control of maternal-fetal adaptations during different phases of pregnancy (Wiemers et al, 2003).
