[Pregnant mare’s serum gonadotropin] This hormone is found at the maternal-fetal interface in pregnant mares (Allen and Moor, 1972) and can be extracted easily from blood. The hormone has an activity similar to luteinizing hormone in equids and is known as equine chorionic gonadotropin (abbr. eCG) (Urwin and Allen, 1982). In non-equine species, PMSG has both FSH [follicle-stimulating hormone] and LH [luteinizing hormone] activity and can stimulate follicular development, ovulation, and corpus luteum formation (for overview see also: Racowsky, 1991; Stouffer et al, 2004).
