[prolactin-like proteins] These proteins belong to an expanded prolactin family of secreted structurally related non-lactogenic hormones that are expressed most prominently in the anterior pituitary, uterus and placenta.
Expansion of the PRL-like protein family has occurred independently in rodents versus the cow and does not exist in the human and dog. The prolactin-like protein gene family locus has expanded in a subset of mammals (Soares, 2004) and is thought to be the result of gene duplication and natural selection (Wallis, 1992).
