approved gene symbol: PAPLN; abbr. Ppn or Ppn-1. Papilin is a secreted extracellular matrix protein and component of the basement membrane (Kramerova et al, 2000). The protein occurs widely, from nematodes to man and can differ in the number of repeats of a given type of protein domain. Its exact function is not known, but Papilins have been shown to interact with several extracellular matrix components and secreted members of the ADAM family of metalloproteinases (Fessler et al, 2004) and are thought to play a role in regulating these proteases via cell-cell interactions or cell adhesion to the extracellular matrix.
