This term pertains to a form of cell death that often occurs in numerous tissues and in many diseases such as stroke, Parkinson's disease, heart attack, diabetes, and as a result of ischemia-reperfusion injury. This form of cell death is distinct from apoptosis, necrosis, or autophagy and is being referred to also as PARP1-dependent cell death [poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase 1-dependent cell death].
