(abbr. PMT). Another name is Pasteurella multocida dermonecrotic toxin (abbr. PMDT) (Buys et al, 1990). In sequence databanks it is being referred to also as Pasteurella multocida mitogenic toxin (Lax et al, 1990).
This toxin (146 kDa) is encoded by the toxA gene of by Pasteurella multocida (Petersen, 1990; Petersen and Foged, 1989). Similar toxins are produced by a variety of other bacteria (see: dermonecrotic toxin).
The Pasteurella toxin is the major virulence factor of this Gram-negative coccobacillus. Pasteurella multocida causes progressive atrophic rhinitis of swine, which is characterized by a destruction of the nasal turbinate bones in growing pigs
