Pentinin is a pentameric peptide fragment that corresponds to the first five C-terminal residues 26-30 of the insulin B chain (insulin-B(26-30)) (Faijerson et al, 2009). Pentinin, YTPKT, is a putative breakdown product of insulin (see also: cryptides) and may be produced by insulin-degrading enzyme, an enzyme expressed by the stem cell/progenitor cells. The peptide has been shown to have neuroprotective effects and at concentrations of 100 pM significantly reduces the number of mature and immature neurons killed by NMDA-induced toxicity in the dentate gyrus.
