abbr. PICD. Also: Phagocytosis-induced apoptosis. This term is being used to refer to mechanisms leading to cell death of phagocytes (such as neutrophils or macrophages) following the ingestion of pathogens.
Phagocytosis-induced cell death of phagocytic leukocytes is an important mechanism in the pathogenesis of bacterial infections. The process may be detrimental or beneficial. For example, when this process occurs in macrophages, it may adversely affect immune responses, whereas its occurrence in neutrophils may be critical for clearing infections (for overview see: DeLeo, 2004).
