[Phasic-tonic neuron]
This term refers to the electrophysiological behaviour of neurons and describes one way in which action potentials are emitted from these cells. Phasic-tonic neurons or phasic-tonic cells give sustained responses with some tendency of adaptation to less than the maximum excitation level. These cells thus behave like phasic neurons in that they show a transient response and a tonic neurons in that their activity is sustained at a lower level.
