This protein from the cabbage white butterfly, Pieris canidia, is related to other similar proteins with ADP-ribosyltransferase activity (see: Pierisin-1, Pierisin-2, Pierisin-3, Pierisin-4, Pierisin-6). Its expression increases thousand-fold from second to third instar larvae and gradually decreases before pupation.
Pierisin-5 has been shown to possess activity as an anticancer peptide, exhibiting cytotoxicity against HeLa cells and hepatocellular carcinoma HepG2 cells.
