PAF (a term with multiple meanings) Platelet-activating factor is a potent ether phospholipid with both pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory properties producing during inflammation (Prescott et al, 2000; Ishii and Shimizu, 2000; for general overview see also: Lordan et al, 2019). The term PAF generally refers to 1-alkyl-2-acetyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (alkyl-PAF), which is the most active form (O’Flaherty et al, 1983). A less active PAF species, 1-acyl-2-acetyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (acyl-PAF) is made in far greater abundance than alkyl-PAF in many cell types (Whatley et al, 1992).
