abbr. often: plexA. This protein from Drosophila melanogaster belongs to the plexins has been identified by Winberg et al (1998). Plexin-A, encoded by gene CG11081, functions as a neuronal receptor for class 1 semaphorins (Semaphorin 1a and Semaphorin 1b) and controls motor and CNS axon guidance.
Flies lacking expression of Plexin-A have guidance defects where motor axons fail to defasciculate properly to innervate wing muscle. These defects are similar to defects observed in flies lacking expression of Plexin-B (Ayoob et al, 2006). Neufeld et al (2011) have shown that Plexin-A, but not Plexin-B, is required for proper axon guidance
