[polo-like kinase-1] Plk-1 (also Plk, polo-like kinase) (603 amino acids) is the human homolog of the Drosophila melanogaster serine/threonine protein kinase polo (gene: CG12306) (Lake and Jelinek, 1993; Holtrich et al, 1994, Hamanaka et al, 1994). The enzyme does not seem to be expressed in adult human tissues except placenta. Plk-1 has several functions in mitotic progression, including spindle formation, centrosome cycles and chromosome segregation (Dai et al, 2002). Growing cell lines express Plk-1 mRNA and there seems to be a correlation of expression with the cell cycle (maximum in G2/M phase) (Lake and Jelinek, 1993).
