This Pseudomonas aeruginosa toxin inhibits protein synthesis, especially in the liver, and is a weak mitogen forT-cells. Injection of this toxin into mice causes cell death by apoptosis in hepatocytes, an increase in plasma transaminase activities, and the release of TNF, IFN-gamma, IL2, and IL6 into the circulation. Cell death in the liver appears to be due to apoptotic signals that depend on TNF-alpha, perforin but are independent of FAS antigen.
