[Rohon-Beard cell]
This cell type is found in the spinal cord of embryonic lower vertebrates (Hughes, 1957; Clarke et al, 1984). Rohon-Beard cells constitute a population of primary sensory neurons (Rohon-Beard neurons; abbr. RB neurons) that normally undergo extreme cell death by apoptosis and exist only transiently in zebrafish, other teleost, and amphibians (Lamborghini, 1987; Kollros and Bovbjerg, 1997; Williams et al, 2000). Neurotrophins such as NT-3 and their receptors have been shown to be of importance. Antibodies that deplete NT-3 induce cell death, whereas exogenous application of NT-3
